Useful Terminology:

Road Race (RR)-A mass start (group) bike race held on rural and urban roads. The first rider to the finish is the winner. Usually much longer in duration than a time trial or criterium and involves different teams and tactics. 
Mass Start-A format of starting in certain athletic events. Usually a large number of competitors begin from the same place at the same time and race along the same course. Riders stand as a group behind the start line. 
Time Trial (TT)-A bike race in which cyclists race alone against the clock. This is a pure test of one's strength and endurance and can be any length. 
Criterium (Crit)-A bike race held on a short closed off circuit. Often times held in city centers with many turns and higher rates of speed. It can be based on length of time or number of laps. Lasts anywhere from 30min to 90min based on category.
